A vehicle (Latin: vehiculum) is a mechanical means of conveyance, a carriage or transport. Most often they are manufactured (e.g. bicycles, cars, motorcycles, trains, ships, boats, and aircraft), although some other means of transport which are not made by humans also may be called vehicles; examples include icebergs and floating tree trunks.

Vehicles may be propelled or pulled by engines or animals including humans, for instance, a chariot, a stagecoach, a mule-drawn barge, an ox-cart or rickshaw. However, animals on their own, though used as a means of transport, are not called vehicles, but rather beasts of burden or draft animals. This distinction includes humans carrying another human, for example a child or a disabled person. Means of transport without a vehicle or animal would include walking, running, crawling, or swimming.

Vehicles that do not travel on land often are called craft, such as watercraft, sailcraft, aircraft, hovercraft, and spacecraft

Land vehicles are classified broadly by what is used to apply steering and drive forces against the ground: wheeled, tracked, railed, or skied.

Why do school buses and transportation vehicles have to stop at a train track?
Q. I dont understand why school buses and transportation vehicles have to stop at train tracks when there is no flashing lights or the gate isnt lowered. How many times has a train ever passed through a railroad crossing without indicating that it is going to do so? I just dont really understand why they do that. I have to say this now that i have read your posts and that is if SAFETY is a priority among transportation vehicles and school buses then why doesnt everyone stop and listen for trains? Shouldnt we all be doing that?

A. I will agree that on the surface it may seem silly, but the law is there for a very very good reason. safety the crossing gates and protective devices are not foolproof, they are mechanical devices and can and do fail. The only sure way to be absolutely postiively safe is to look, both ways every time. Dont ever allow a mechanical device to tell you the coast is clear. do it yourself. That is exactly what buses are required to do because crossing protection is NOT reliable enough. P.S. love the avatar btw, Tolkein rules!!

How would switching all vehicles sold in the US to run on alternative fuels by 2050 help the economy?
Q. I need all the possible reasons that passing a law, stating that by 2050 all vehicles should run on alternative fuels, would help the United States economy. It would help greatly if you gave your sources and statistics if possible... thanks!

A. There is absolutely no reason to believe that passing such a law would help. 1. You haven't mentioned what you consider to be an "alternative fuel" or the possibility of cars not running on fuel (is electricity a fuel? not by current definitions. So you are going to outlaw electric cars?) 2. The bottom line is that we haven't the foggiest notion of how society is going to change over the next 40 years and what the important concerns are going to be. In this context, looking at "alternative fuelds" is letting the tail wag the dog. 3. Almost of the current "alternative fuels" are currently more expensive or more damaging to the environment than any of the current non-alternative fuels. So, by definition, switching to alternative fuels is… [cont.]
