What's the difference between professional fuel injector cleaning and using products bought in stores?
Q. I want to know if I should have my fuel injectors professionally cleaned, of if I will be just as good using the fuel injector cleaners I have been buying at local auto parts stores. I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee and it is idling rough.

A. Excellent first answer. Note that your normal maintenance schedule in your owner's manual does not include fuel injection cleaning! I personally like Chevron gas and their Chevron Concentrated Techron fuel injection and intake manifold cleaning product available at auto stores. All Chevron regular and premium gas contains the same amount of Techron.

How can I change a Fuel Injector on a 1995 Beretta Myself?
Q. I've been told I can remove it quite easily & replace the O Rings on the injector instead of replacing the "entire" injector itself. The fuel injector is plastic, the cap ontop of the injector is plastic. Its located on the drivers side.(in the middle) Its an Automatic transmission. Its a 2.2 litre 4 cylinder engine. Ok chevymatt Is there any way I can tell if the injector is leaking internally or externally?
Asked by feenix - Thu May 24 06:14:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. it is quite easy on that engine. remove the air intake tube, throttle cable bracket at throttle body, and 2 torx screws holding the fuel injector hold-down bracket. it will take a little wiggling to get that bracket slid off the injectors and out from under the fuel pressure regulator. after that bracket is off, the injector will slide right out of the rail with a little pry. as far as replacing the o-rings and not the whole injector -- if it is leaking externally (which they always do on those engines), you are going to have to replace the whole injector. the injector body itself is what leaks, not the o-rings. be sure to lube the o-rings when you are putting it back together.

How often should I add fuel injector cleaner to my gas?
Q. I have an '04 Chevy Aveo, and I'd like to keep it running as well as possible until the frame rusts out. I heard that injector cleaner has to be carefully moderated, or else it gums up the spark plugs. How often should I pour it in the tank? Thanks!

A. You really only need to use it maybe once a year. Modern gasoline has detergents in it that keep the engine fairly clean. People really only need to use it when they have had a bad batch of gasoline or other bizarre things.

what's the difference between fuel injector cleaner and fuel system cleaner?
Q. i have honda civic 2000 LX. MPG used to be around 34 but now days it's 24 MPG. I see that there are a lot of fuel injector cleaner and fuel system cleaner? What are they? are they pretty much the same? +1 question: do i need octane booster? what is it?
Asked by Monster - Thu Mar 13 01:00:14 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The two terms are used interchangably to describe the same type of product. The injector/fuel system cleaners break up and remove the varnish like residue that builds up in the fuel lines and fuel injectors. These deposits begin to cause the injectors to spray the fuel in an erratic pattern causing a loss of performance and economy. Some products can also break up the carbon deposits that build up in your engine that also cause reduced performance, but mostly all of them are intended to do the same job. I wouldnt use an octane booster, its a product designed to increase the volotility of your gasoline to make it combust at a lower temperature. If your car is not engineered for 93 octane fuel then 93 octane fuel usually wont do you any good… [cont.]

Q. I'm getting spark and compression, and the fuel seems to be pumping. I assume the injectors aren't firing. How do i tell if my fuel injector needs replacement/cleaning?
Q. I was told my car needs work done on the fuel injector. The mechanic said that since it jerks sometimes when i press the gas, the fuel injector is having problems. Is this true? The car is an 89 ford escort with 45k miles. New spark plugs, recent oil change, and recent trans fluid change. I don't think there are any trans problems, as the jerking happens even when it doesnt shift.

A. Rough idling; lack of smooth accelaration, poor fuel economy, hard starting, and visible leaks are all signs of fuel injector problems. A 1989 Escort I suspect has 145 k miles (I have a 1989 Mazda 323, vritually the same car with 200 k miles). I have never had a problem with the fuel injectors. Two things to try; add 2 quarts of Methyl alcohol (Methanol) to your gas tank and fill with 87 Octane gas). Second, add fuel injector cleaner to a full tank of gas (available from Napa, GI Joes, Prp Boys, etc). If you still have the jerking problem, it may be a faulty Oxygen Sensor (feels like an ignition miss when driving).

A. your best bet is to have someone take the injectors out and physically inspect them first. if that is not enough to tell which one is bad, then you might have to take them to a specialty shop and have them clean them out and during the cleaning process, they'll be able to tell which one is bad. see, fuel injectors can look perfectly clean when you look at them, but the internals can be full of gunk. and with all due respect to the other posting, DO NOT unplug the fuel injector while the car is running. not only would you have fuel spraying all over the place, but you have the possibility of simply lighting up in flames and shooting up to the sky. in order to remove an injector, you must first de-pressurize the fuel rail and remove both the… [cont.]

Q. The possible causes of the injector nozzle to get burned off or chocked
Asked by Eby V - Wed May 13 05:09:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Idling allows the cylinder temps to fall off, causing some unburned fuel. So does low compression, low fuel pressure at the nozzle and poor fuel quality. This lets the nozzle get clogged, causing a bad spray pattern making it worse.

Can fuel injector cleaner damage a piston?
Q. my repair man unseized an engine by putting fuel injector cleaner into the engine. the engine destroyed the piston, we found parts of it in the oil pan. is this normal? has anyone heard of this?
Asked by mike c - Mon Sep 10 22:17:45 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The mechanic should have pulled the spark plug out while he rolled the engine over. If he did then the piston wouldnt have shattered from the compression, just from the stress of being so tight on the cylinder walls while it was being forced up and down, If He left the plug in while he rolled the engine over its very possable that it would have caused piston damage

A. It sounds like your injectors are dirty, or have carbon deposits on the tips. That will make the spray pattern go nuts! You may need to check the fuel filter as well. Take your car to a shop where they can check your fuel pressure, injector pulse width, and clean your injectors. I'd think about replacing that computer as well, it'll save you trouble down the road. Readers Digest version: Fuel injection Systems You have: high pressure fuel pump, filter, injector fuel rails, fuel pressure regulator, and return line to gas tank. Computer controls fuel pump, injector pulse width (time injector actually fires),and adjustments based on engine load factors for injector timing, and pulse width. Fuel not used by injectors is returned to fuel tank… [cont.]

how much does it cost to repair a clogged or damaged fuel injector caused by getting some bad gas?
Q. I have the 95 mazda millenia that I posted the previous question about it running like an old truck. Over the past couple of weeks I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to fix my car which I take very good care of by the way and it turns out I got some bad gas from a station where I have filled up every week for the past two years which in turn clogged or damaged the number 2 fuel injector which is effecting the cylinder causing the car to misfire. How much will that cost me to repair? And another thought, is it possible to get the gas station where I purchased the gas to assist with these repair costs? Or am I just asking too much?

Why are there metal shavings around my fuel injector?
Q. I was having a hesitation problem in my 1995 T100 and it appeared to be a fuel injector problem. There was a code set for misfiring on cylinder 1, so I pulled it today along with the other two injectors on that side. When I pulled the injector there were metal shavings right around where it sits in the cylinder. What could have caused this? BTW, up until 600 miles ago, the truck hadn't been run in over 3 years.
Asked by Jack B - Sun Nov 2 16:14:34 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The injectors sit in an alloy seat. Just by removing the injectors from their seated position will cause some shavings to be created. The injector housing itself is non-alloy and made of harder non-alloy material. That's where the shavings came from. I would not worried about it. The shavings can be blown clean with shop air, plug the injector seat when doing that. Good luck

Is it a good idea to use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner regularly?
Q. I use cheap gas like Arco & Ultramar and my car got 18MPG. I switched to Chevron for a month and got 22MPG! But I can't afford Chevron cause they are like 30 cents/gal more. So Can I use Arco and use Chevron Techron fuel injector... won't that have same effect as using Chevron gas? I heard that they add just 1 quart of Techron to a tanker so that isn't much.
Asked by unknown - Mon Oct 5 22:15:37 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 1 qt. would not treat a whole tanker, the cheap gas probably has more water in it, i would use the inj. cleaner anyway just cuz i does help break up any deposits.
