How deep to put gopher cages?
Q. I'm planning to plant some giant pumpkins this year. All of my other veges are in raised beds due to our gopher infestation. How deep should I make gopher cages? 1 gal size, 3 gal? How deep do the roots go?
Asked by Ninjabut - Sun Jan 17 15:55:01 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, I'd make them about 16" X 2 X 2 feet. I've made chicken wire lined beds and hardware cloth lined beds. The wire didn't last but a couple of years before it started decomposing. I had to start over. I plant my watermelons, cantaloupes, and winter squash in raised beds. They are scrap wood 1' X 2' X 2'. I line the bottom with tennis ball size rock that I get out of a nearby wash (that's creek back East). That has worked for me. I keep two vines per box. I let the vines run over the boxes and out onto the ground. I set little boards under the melons to keep them out of the dirt. I also have switched all my veggies to rock lined raised beds. Gophers are awful here. The cat can't get them all.

A. Gopher is an old Internet protocol that predates the HTTP protocol. It combines elements of FTP and hyper linking. It's not used anymore in typical Internet services since the web tools and services are much more robust and developed.

How can you retrieve a scared family cat,(declawed) out of a gopher hole with many tunnels?
Q. She is an indoor cat who has never been outside. Family looked everywhere. She was missing over a week. The husband happened to look into the woods one day, saw her and she took off. Could not find her. Just happened to see her later run into a gopher hole. Cages set up with food, but she's too scared to come out. It is a calico cat, well kept, and groomed.

A. The humane traps with food is a good idea, but there's no garuntee you'll catch the cat. Carefull about catching racoons or other small wild animals. If she has a toy she played with, try leaving that hanging in a cage or something. Or even a blanket or something. She may recognize the smell and want to lay in it. If this doesn't work, try calling her. She's probably scared, but stay calm and don't chase her or anything. Good luck, I hope you get her back home soon!

How much of a gopher will a cat eat?
Q. Just watched my cat tag a small prairie gopher and carry it off. How much of it will she normally eat?

A. I agree, depending on the size of the cat AND the rodent, most of the time cats eat all. Everything is good for them, cats are the purist of carnivores and as long as bones are NOT cooked they are very healthy for them.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of a gopher?
Q. My uncle lives in a trailor and has a gopher living under it. Can anyone suggest any ways to get rid of it w/out killing it preferrably.
Asked by Jess - Tue Dec 26 12:43:17 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I have always heard that planting garlic cloves will chase the gophers away. They apparently don't like the smell. If that doesn't work, there is a product (you could probably find it at the hardware store) that you stake in the ground. It sends either an electric current into the ground, or emits a high intensity sound which will chase the gophers away. Either way, you will get rid of them without killing them

How do I get rid of a gopher?
Q. I have a gopher. He leaves no mounds! Just a trail that bumps up the ground. I can see them and tamp them back down with my feet. I don't know how to get rid of this pest, he's got tons of trails along my wife's flower gardens and all over the yard. I have no problem killing this creature, but I don't think a trap will work. Any suggestions?

A. This one is very simple URINE that's right URINE when you gotta go you gotta go, just go down the hole, as long as there are no neighbors around, or take a container in the bathroom relieve yourself, then take the container out to the hole dump it in. All natural, no pesticides and you don't have to hire a professional or spend time and money trying to find the remedy at your local hardware store.

How do you make a home made gopher trap?
Q. Got a BIG gopher problem...and I can't shoot EVERY one of them either.
Asked by Charlie H - Wed Jul 29 18:18:44 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 1. Cover all entrances to the gopher holes with large heavy rocks. 2. Make sure all the holes are covered, or holes within a 5 meter radius (gophers network their tunnels). 3. Get a a LOT of water (15-30 gallons). 4. Pour the water down the hole. 5. When the gophers come up (if they do), have a friend kill them with a bat or something like it. Or get one of those smoke things that poisons them. Or use poisoned grain. I've had the most success with this, although you have to be careful that nothing else eats either the grain or dead gophers. But they love the stuff. I've killed hundreds with the grain.

Anyone know how to get rid of a gopher?
Q. Tunneling thru my yard and really tearing it up-is ther a way to get rid of it or at least repel it?
Asked by Simon says - Wed Jul 19 14:13:29 2006 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Here's a link to 5 more tips at eHow.com that might help. But remember: "Much folklore exists on how to get rid of moles. But there is little evidence that flooding; putting chewing gum, castor oil or dog hair in the holes; firebombing; or ultrasonic pest repellents actually work. Be careful not to create a larger problem for your yard than the moles present. After all, moles will aerate your soil, add organic matter to your garden and kill unwanted and harmful grubs before moving on." That's from the 2nd link -- also, if you have a pet that might munch on a dead mole after you poisoned it, you might want to think twice about that option, since the poison will transfer. Good luck!

A. go to walmart, get a rubbermaid bin, drill some holes and BAM you have a new viv (don't forget the under tank heater). I did this when I unexpectedly came into owning a spotted python, it works great. Just make sure the lid is secure, and if you have to buy a luggage strap at the dollar store to put around the bin for extra security. The gopher might eat the corn, even if not it's still not a good idea snakes are solitary creatures, they do not hang out with each other in wild, because they don't *want* to. Let them live alone, in peace.

How big should my Tank should be for my Corn Snake or Gopher Snake?

A. Babies can be housed very nicely in rubbermaid tubs for the first year or so. A 20-30 gl. tank would be fine for an adult cornsnake, but a gopher (bullsnake) would need a 40-50 gl. as they are much larger than the corns.
