Google search is a web search engine owned by Google Inc. and is the most-used search engine on the Web . Google receives several hundred million queries each day through its various services. Google search was originally developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1997.

Beyond the original word-search capability, Google Search provides more than 22 special features, such as: synonyms; weather forecasts; time zones; stock quotes; maps; earthquake data; movie showtimes; airports; home listings; sports scores, etc. (see below: Special features). There are special features for numbers: prices; temperatures; money/unit conversions ("10.5 cm in inches"); calculations ( 3*4+sqrt(6)-pi/2 ); package tracking; patents; area codes; plus rudimentary language translation of displayed pages.

A Google search-results page is ordered by a priority rank called "PageRank" which is kept secret to avoid spammers from forcing their pages to the top. Google Search provides many options for customized search (see below: Search options), such as: exclusion ("-xx"), inclusion ("+xx"), alternatives ("xx OR yy"), and wildcard matching ("*").

How do you get to the top on a google search without paying extra for ads?
Q. Everytime you search for something on google sites like wikipedia are near the top - but wikipedia has only been around a few years How did they do it? - how do you get your site at the top of google searchs without paying extra?? Thanks!

A. It's all about content and search engine optimization. No one pays to be at the top of the organic search engine results, at least they shouldn't be paying - that would be unethical ;). Now, the results you see along the top and at the right side of the page are "sponsored" results, in other words, ads. Those are paid for by bidding on keywords. The higher you bid on your chosen keyword(s), the higher your placement can be in the sponsored results. But back to the regular search results, which are sometimes called "organic" search results. Informational sites like Wikipedia are near the top because the search engine spiders crawl the web for the sites with the most relevant content to your search query. Sites that sell items… [cont.]

How long do cached files in Google and other search engines last?
Q. If you have a web page on the internet/blog post etc and you delete it, it can still be found as a cached page in Google. Does this stay there forever, or is the cached page updated the next time the Google bot does a crawl? In other words, in a few months or so will you be unable to find the deleted post through a Google search? (also, is it the same with other search engines?) Thanks in advance for your replies!
Asked by Me - Tue Jul 10 12:12:21 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hey! That's why they call it cache files it's temporary. Next time google will crawl your pages it will change. Usually in a 2-3 weeks range. There is other place where you still might find it internet archive they storing cashed pages permanently. Cheers, DS
