Geography (from Greek γεωγραφία - geographia, lit. "earth describe-write") is the study of the Earth and its lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena. A literal translation would be "to describe or write about the Earth". The first person to use the word "geography" was Eratosthenes (276-194 B.C.). Four historical traditions in geographical research are the spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena (geography as a study of distribution), area studies (places and regions), study of man-land relationship, and research in earth sciences. Nonetheless, modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that foremost seeks to understand the Earth and all of its human and natural complexities—not merely where objects are, but how they have changed and come to be. As "the bridge between the human and physical sciences," geography is divided into two main branches—human geography and physical geography.

How valued is a geography degree for becoming an airplane pilot?
Q. I am thinking about majoring in geography at Ohio State University and would like to know how applicable a geography degree would be as far as becoming an pilot is concerned.

A. Geography is a broad discipline, generally divided into two sub-themes, human geography and physical geography. A university degree in Geography, with an emphasis on physical geography, can provide an excellent foundation for your training as a pilot. The benefits would be further enhanced if you could work in some coursework in math and meteorology (and perhaps physics, too), although a major or minor in these areas isn't essential at all. Why is knowledge and understanding of physical geography useful for you as a pilot? Because it would make you better prepared to assess accurately the great diversity of situations and conditions in the air and land environment that can influence the operation of your aircraft, and enhance your… [cont.]

Q. can you describe the geography of the western us? CITE your sources please. if you can't, i don't mind that much. thnks.

A. You really need to be more specific to get helpful answers. The western US is a **HUGE** area and there's lots of variation in the terrain: plains, forests, deserts, multiple mountain ranges, lots of rivers and a good number of decent-sized lakes. You can see all that just by looking at a physiographical map (one that shows landforms). If that isn't what you needed to know, then please add more details to your question and I'll try again.

What do you need to be good at in school to get a Geography Degree?
Q. What subjects in school do you need to be good at apart from Geography its self, to get a degree in Geography?

A. I agree with the previous person. Another degree that is REALLY cool is GIS (geographic information systems). It is a combination geography and computer degree. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. I know it isn't exactly what you wanted, but I wasn't sure if you knew about it!!
