How much fuel is left in the tank when the fuel gauge blinks empty?
Q. I'm using a Mitsubishi Lancer GLS and sometimes I don't have the time to pass by a gas station before my gauge hits the last line. I've always wondered how far can I still go on a blinking fuel gauge. Sky Pilot, I spend 12 hrs infront of the computer daily due to my kind of work so I have more time to ask this question than go to the gas station. Thanks for the info.

A. most every car is different. I had one that said a light would come on when I had enough gas to go only 50 miles. The light came on and I went about one more mile and it died. Learn not to let it fall below 1/4 tank. When gas gets very low, if there is trash or moisture in the tank it can get to the engine causing big problems.

How hard is it to repair a broken fuel gauge?

On a 12 year old truck I would buy an aftermarket gauge,something like Auto-Meter from O'Riellys or Car Quest or your local auto parts and just install under the dash and re-route the sending units wire to the new gauge,any handyman should be able to do this procedure.I know this probably isn't the answer you were looking for but it is an option.To answer your q's,I don't think you will be able to fix it yourself,taking a dash apart can be daunting task,lots of wires and other gauges to contend with.Although you can make sure the connections on the sending unit are good.It may just be a loose wire,also check for blown fuses.I would think @ $75.00 per hour it might get expensive in a hurry,if you let a pro do it.Good luck and God bless.I… [cont.]

A. I do not believe I have ever seen a gauge available, however, new stuff comes out all the time. I just reset the trip meter each time I refill, that way all I have to do is look at the mileage and I know how far I have before it goes on reserve, which is probably more accurate than a fuel gauge. Check out www.bellacorse.com and www.newbonneville.com they have lots of Bonneville stuff.

Why does my Taurus fuel gauge go up and down?
Q. I just purchased a '99 Ford Taurus and everything works fine on the car except for the gas gauge. The car was half full today and I put another $20 in and the gas hand read full, not within two minutes of my leaving the gas station did the gas hand sink all the way back down to 3/4. Later when I turned the car off and back on the fuel gauge was higher then again sank down. What is the problem and how can this be fixed?

A. Start off by waiting till the tank is almost empty. Playing with fuel systems is extremely hazardous, and requires absolute adherence to good safety practices. If you are unaware of what these are, don"t start this job. You will have to remove the last of the fuel from the tank. Danger will Robinson danger! Drop the tank. Remove sending unit. check float. check sending unit. replace any damaged parts. operate sending unit Now you know if it is the tank or gauge.

A. The lower the number, the richer the fuel/air mixture is, the higher, the leaner. Generally 14.7 is an ideal mixture. The numbers wont be steady, constantly going up and down slightly, but will be in the ballpark of what mixture your vehicle is running.

Why does new fuel pump fitted to 55-reg Ford Focus result in inaccurate reading on fuel gauge ?
Q. The garage have just fitted a new petrol pump to my Focus, and it is is going in next week for the fourth time, because the fuel gauge is still inaccurate. Is it just trial and error, or are they doing something wrong ? I can only tell when I fill up at the petrol station, and then have to wait until the tank is almost empty before I take it back again.

The problem is not a pump, its a fuel sending unit, when it get old or bended on the repair, it doesnt read correctly ! a fuel pump can be removed from a sending unit and replaced, so leave the pump and get a new sending unit then it should be ok. another possible problem is wiring, but its unlikely...

Q. the fuel gauge will occasionaly rise to full when you start it, sometimes it will only rise to the correct (possibly) place instead. it does not always rise when you start the car. it however does always end up at empty, usually within a minute or two but sometimes it can stay at full for 300 or more miles. no check engine light. any idea what he worst case scenario would be to fix it if it were something like the entire panel going out?

The fuse is not the problem.If it were blown the guage wouldn't work at all.I doubt the problem is the guage either.It sounds like the float and/or sending unit in the tank is faulty.Replacing it would require removing the tank.The parts shouldn't be that expensive but the labor probably will be,as this is a moderately difficult job.

No The sender is electrical, has nothing to do with the guage not working. to test the guage, ground the wires that go to the sending unit-the guage should go all the way past empty. ungroundng it should leave the guage all the way past full. Or visa-versa-been a while on an old GM. Either way, grouding the sender wires should cause the guage to react with the key on.

A. Raul, the ZX6R was my first bike back in 96, good choice! Indeed what the others are saying is correct, the green stuff is your coolant overflow. As temperature increases so too does pressure. The coolant pressure needs to go somewhere other than the road otherwise you would end up on the bitument! When your machine cools down, the temperature eventually drops so too does the coolant pressure resulting in a negative pressure in your cooling circuit! Your machine is carburetted but dont let that bother you. If your ride it hard then I would suggest getting your carbs syncronised every 5000 on it's services. Along with that I would ask for valve clearance to be checked at the same time. I had this done when I owned one and it was dynoed… [cont.]

A. Check behind the dash and make sure the Gauge is correctly connected and has no corrosion. Also inspect wires, commonly after market sound systems improperly instaled splice into any wire with power. If this is the case simple repaire. although the simplest is usually the best Try to check the gauge itself. Example a cheap after marketreplacement gauge. I would not go tearing out the fuel pump as abviosly it still works.

A. there's not no easy way to fix those,its either the sending unit in the gas tank that has gone bad or the gage its self,and you have to pull the dash out to do this,on the sending unit ,you have to drop the tank and remove the unit,so there's no easy way at all to do it,good luck with it,hope this helps.

Q. I just had honda fix my speedometer/ode and now my fuel gauge and thermostat go to the max when my car is turned on. The kept it an extra night and couldnt figure it out. Now I have to wait and bring it in when I have a chance. I need advice on how to handle these people if they want to charge me to fix and any ideas on what the problem is?
