What fuel will airplanes run on once fossil based fuels are exhausted?
Q. Cars have options of bio fuels and electricity.. Ships have nuclear options... But what fuel option does an airplane have? We hear of airline fleets expanding and newer, better and bigger airports being built all the time, but is there an eternal source of jet fuel?
Asked by remyt69 - Tue Apr 24 07:29:03 2007 - - 21 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sorry if this answer is too long...but its the only way to describe it... My guess is that when things start to get tight there will be two options for aircraft and they will utilize both... First is ethanol... farm high sugar content crops... ferment them to convert to ethanol... a few additives and you've got some pretty good avgas. (Of course biofuel could work good for jet fuel too!) Second is solar energy... planes that have demonstrated this have been light in weight, with the majority of their weight actually being solar cells... Also because the cells are rigid and straight the wings on the plane were more "rigid" on top. They didn't have that nice curve that generates the most lift. Solar companies are now developing solar cells… [cont.]

What would cause fuel injectors not to work?
Q. I have a 90' GMC suburban. That recently broke down. Engine shut off and would not start. Fuel pump is working fine, fuel filter etc. Throttle linkage is also fine. My guess is something electronic, maybe a safety feature is causing the fuel injectors not to release fuel. All fuses have been checked. Any ideas for things to check? It is an electronic fuel injected throttle body.
Asked by JoHnAtHaN S - Fri Sep 11 20:04:26 2009 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. 1...Try to spray starting fluid in throttle body while somebody turns the key and cranks engine. If it starts then you know its a fuel delivery problem. If it runs then you need to find out why its not getting fuel 2...Check for injector pulse. You can use a noid light or even a test light will work.Hook test light in series with injector plug and have someone crank engine while watching light. It should pulse/flash.If it does than you know the computer is trying to command injector. 3...If no injector pulse check to see if crank sensor is working.Check to see if computer controls power or ground when injector is fired.

How do I retrieve all the fuel from the fuel tank?
Q. We ship a lot of cars to other countries and it would be ideal to get all the fuel out of the tanks before we put the cars into containers. Most of these cars have filters in the fuel filler neck, so siphoning is not an option. I was wondering if it was possible to rig up a connection to the 'air' valve in the engine compartment (on the fuel rail) and turn the car on allowing the fuel pump to pump all the fuel out? Thanks for the answers and any other sugestions.

A. you take the return line off after the regulator on the fuel rail remove gas cap to keep the pressure in the tank down hook up a hose to the regulator out put run hose into fuel container or other vehicle start car and it will run until it runs out of fuel hook back up all hoses and put cap back on on the other end of shipping add 5 gallons of fuel and start UP the car

How much fuel is consumed by airplanes than to cars?
Q. Does anyone know the ratio of airplane fuel consumption to ground fuel consumption? Also, what the *** is wrong with people these days isn't there a way to get better fuel mileage than 6-7 gallons per mile on an airplane, when you're traveling thousands of miles at a time?
Asked by V H - Sun Jul 20 11:33:18 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. According to British Airways, a 747-400 plane cruises at 576 mph (927km/h), burns 3378 US gallons (12,788 liters) of fuel per hour, and carries 409 passengers when full: If the plane is 75% full, one passenger is carried 52.2 miles for each US gallon of fuel burned (22.2 km for each liter of fuel burned). This fuel efficiency exceeds that of almost all cars, when the driver is traveling alone. So, to answer your question, it is actually MORE fuel efficient to travel large distances in a place (Provided it is at least 75% full) than it is to drive the same distance. Depending on distance, it may also be cheaper. You see, you have to factor in the number of passengers that can fit in a plane and determine passenger miles per gallon.

How can I test a fuel pressure regulator if the car does not start?
Q. I took the car to a mechanic yesterday who said the fuel pump was bad. I'm assuming he said this because there wasn't enough fuel pressure. I am still having the same stalling issues. I have read the fuel pressure regulator can cause this. I have personally replaced alot of other parts to rule out electrical problem. Any advise on how to test the fuel pressure reg will be appreciated. thanks.

A. first thing is fuel injection or carburetor? assuming is FI you have to cut the outlet fuel hose and place a fuel pressure gauge there if it is higher than 20psi then is bad your regulator but... it can be different psi depend on the engine and brand of the car buy the repair manual of your car it should say what is the correct psi at the inlet and the outside fuel line is very weird in FI system get a broken fuel regulator (unless you have work on it) they are mechanical and cant be adjusted so... they will work ever at the same pressure if your car dont start is still an electrical issue

How much fuel would you save driving on two half tanks of fuel rather than one full tank?
Q. We all know that more weight requires more energy to move it. If a car has more fuel in it, it has more weight, hence more energy, hence more fuel required to move it. Ignoring all other factors such as more trips to the fuel pump and driving conditions etc, how much fuel would you save by using to half tanks of fuel opposed to one full tank? Lets assume a 50 litre tank and a car that goes to 35mpg (imperial gallon)
Asked by Quoth Raven - Sun Apr 20 09:35:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not enough to warrant doubling the number of trips you have to make to the gas station. There are quite a few variables that would go in that you aren't taking into account: weight of vehicle, size of tank, fuel efficiency of engine, etc.

Asked by karate09 - Mon Dec 31 17:39:20 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My personal opinion is it would use more gasoline but on a normal running system, you really wouldn't see the increase per say (as injectors are measured in flow plus how long they stay open).. it would cause the engine to run richer (and try to lean itself out to the point it will set a check engine light on a marginal system) but would it bring economy or power? nope unless you install other gear to help the fuel injectors do it's job as optimized.

A. Depends on year make and model. Most modern cars will benefit by using a fuel system cleaner you add to the gas once or twice a year. You can DYI by buying a can at any local auto parts store like a auto zone or kragen etc.. Just follow the directions on the can.

Q. The car is the only thing you have to work with/on. Fuel efficiency means higher gas mileage or lower fuel consumption.

A. You're really cutting out the main factors... but you could also improve this by doing things like - Decrease air resistance/drag by making the body more aerodynamic - Use lighter materials to make the car weigh less, overall - Change the proportion of driving type that is used (highway vs city), not sure if this falls under acceptable answers

How much fuel pressure should I be getting?
Q. I have an 1989 s-10 2.5l fuel injected. It has the original fuel pump and it is not pumping at enough pressure to keep the engine running. How much pressure should I be getting?
Asked by jcrulz13 - Mon Aug 21 12:53:49 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This depends on if you have throttle body injection or port injection. Throttle body injection usually uses around 16 pounds max. Port injection can go all the way from 32 to well over 100 pounds. You need to call a parts store and find out what pressure your pump is supposed to be putting out. They can look in their fuel pump book and find the pressure rating in the back of the book. Also refer to your repair manual for the proper pressure at the fuel rail if it is port injected. Also check the fuel pressure regulator. Your pump might be working fine but the regulator isn't letting the proper amount of pressure through.

A. There are few kinds of pumps. The most used ones are the in tank and the in line ones. Without the make and model I can only guess that yours is inside the fuel tank. It is not an easy job for non experienced person. However, here are the steps to fallow, It is better to do it with an empty tank... - Unhook the battery - Open the gas tank cap. - Release the fuel pressure from the fuel pressure rail (There is a valve that looks like a tire valve) - Lift and jack the vehicle up. - Take the wheel off - Put a jack under the tank just to hold this one up. - Take the two bolts holding the two metal straps. - Slowly lower the tank half way. - Unplug the harness - Unhook the fuel line and the air line. - Completely lower the tank. - … [cont.]

A. Use the fuel that the torch is designed to burn. Check the manufacturer's website if you don't have the instructions. We use a propane torch from the garage to do stuff like that, And one other thing, if you're going to use a torch in your kitchen, make sure that you also have a fire extinguisher handy. A. I work for M.C. Mobility Systems, Inc. ( ) and Ability Van Rentals ( ) and we recommend that customers who are concerned about fuel efficiency go with a Honda or a Toyota. Unfortunately, the additional weight of a wheelchair lift or conversion package will effect the fuel efficiency, but these two makes are probably the best solutions. Hope this helps!

Asked by Monster - Thu Mar 13 01:00:14 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The two terms are used interchangably to describe the same type of product. The injector/fuel system cleaners break up and remove the varnish like residue that builds up in the fuel lines and fuel injectors. These deposits begin to cause the injectors to spray the fuel in an erratic pattern causing a loss of performance and economy. Some products can also break up the carbon deposits that build up in your engine that also cause reduced performance, but mostly all of them are intended to do the same job. I wouldnt use an octane booster, its a product designed to increase the volotility of your gasoline to make it combust at a lower temperature. If your car is not engineered for 93 octane fuel then 93 octane fuel usually wont do you any good… [cont.]

A. Ron is correct, the ONLY reason for higher octane numbers is to prevent detonation in very high compression engines. The higher the octane number the SLOWER the fuel burns, so if you ran 100 octane in an engine that only required 87 you would not only be wasting money but the tops of your pistons and valves and valve seats would have a thick layer of black gunk on them due to the unburnt fuel blowing out of your exhaust. Remember folks, octane does not make power!! Please do a little research on this before you keep wasting your money putting mid or high grade gas in your Honda Accord, there are NO extra additives, cleaners, detergents or miracles in mid or high grade gas over plain old regular unleaded, they all have exactly the same… [cont.]

A. A turbo-back exhaust will help with economy some. It will also lower exhaust temperatures (something important to watch on a modified diesel, even a stock diesel in my opinion). The intake will help some as well. Remember, the truck is forced induction, so it is sucking a lot more air than a naturally aspirated motor would. A mild tune chip could help with economy as well, or an adjustable chip on a lower setting. I run an '04 6.0L with the Edge Juice w/ Attitude controller, The truck is always run on setting #2 'Tow-Mode'. My boost pressure doesn't get radical, but I can bring the EGTs to unsafe levels on a long pull on a hot day (factory exhaust). What is the best fuel to use in a Grand Marquis?
Q. I own a 98 Grand Marquis and have used regular, mid-grade and premium gas in it. The owner's manual states that the car is designed to run on regular unleaded (87 octane) fuel only, yet contradicts itself early on by stating that it can use 87 or better. If it should ping and knock, switch the brand but not the octane. I have heard from different mechanics, dealer too, that they were surprised that I was 'getting away' with regular unleaded fuel in it as 'bigger engines require more octane' to run properly. I have noticed a considerable difference when I fill it with premium (93 octane) gas. It runs fine on regular too, however it rattles very loudly with the a/c on when filled with it. Please share your opinions. Sorry, yes the car is… [cont.]
Asked by Lowrider - Fri Aug 31 11:06:42 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi, yes your car is designed to run on 87 octane. If your vehicle rattles when the a/c is on, but doesn't when you run higher octane, you are hearing detonation. Detonation is bad and can damage the engine. There is a few things that can cause detonation. Most common is the engine is out of timing, but on your vehicle it should be controlled by the computer. If the vehicle has high mileage, it could have carbon build up inside the motor / cylinders / valves, etc. It also could be caused by a faulty EGR system. In your situation if it is a vehicle with high mileage, you may need to stick to the higher octane.
