A. Timing belt every 40K MILES! It is $200 in parts through eBay. The belt itself is not expensive, but you may as well replace the tensioners and pullies at the same time and the water pump too. Your car has an "interference" motor, which means if the cam shafts stop, the pistons will hit the valves... To summarize, a broken timing belt is a broken motor. Daewoo went out of business in the US, and is no longer a car company, so you are on your own. Parts stores carry hardly any parts for it. Get parts over the Internet. A. That's Cobalt, and only if it's automatic, because they are the same transmission, where GM has owned Daewoo for sometime now. It would fit but would be allot of work, the whole wiring harness would have to be changed, and fuel system, motor mounts, custom hoses. But if you have lots of free time and money, Get-ER-Done.

Q. My wifes W Reg Daewoo matiz SE+ engine management light comes on after a few minutes driving for no apparent reason, car still seems to be running OK. The light goes off again after an engine restart but lights up again soon after so assume it must be related to the engine temp somehow. Does anyone have any suggestions about what it can be as I have been all round the local garages and nobody has the right kit/software to download the error codes. A. We have a vauxhall Zafira & have had the same problem. There was something to do with the emissions which we had sorted but the light has remained on for some time. Our mechanic does have the right kit & it's registering as no fault so I guess it's just one of those things in our case. If you're in South Wales I can give you our mechanic's number!

A. Well unless you killed the engine you should not need one for an overheating problem. However I will say this, Daewoo was bought buy GM and then dismanteled. I have a customer that had (maybe still has,Havent seen it in awhile) a Daewoo and that is what I found out. I went online and found a dealership within 500 miles that still had access to parts and was able to get some for the car. They were not right, Close but not right. I had to modify to make work then only gave a temp status on repair. I dont like being negative but I would bail out on that car first chance I got. Q. My friend has a 2001 Daewoo Lanos Sport with a 1.6L L4 engine. This is the 2nd motor they have had blow up. Is there any other manufactured engine that will fit in this car with little hassle? My father and i have recently installed the replacement timing belt and idler pulley the came apart in his daewoo nubria. we have requested help from the local dealership but really have received no assistance. most of the parts were purchased from NAPA and the provided basic replacment instructions via mithchell repair manuals. however the instructions do not compensate for the fact the one or maybe both of the overhead cam pulleys may be out of sinc with the crankshaft , we have tried several sequences but are lost. We are reluctant to use the dealership. We handle basic mechanical work, but seem unable to get this one figured out.

A. Hi, No, you can't just replace your timing belt. It's a non-trivial task. The timing belt takes power from the crankshaft and drives the camshaft. The camshaft in turn, drives the valves. With the belt broken, the cam stops rotating, so the valves stop moving. but the crankshaft is still moving and so are the pistons. these pistons will keep slamming into the open valves till the crankshaft stops moving. That can do a lot of damage to the: 1) Open Valves 2) Piston Crowns 3) Cylinder liners 4) Cylinder head 5) Pistons rings Solution: Tow your car to a workshop and have them open your engine to check for damage. There's no other way of knowing what's broken and how much it costs to fix. HTH

A. well that one guy was right about not using the filter but the way he explained how to drain it a little even confused me a little, let me simplify for you a little. Get yourself a drain pan to catch the oil with and underneath the vehicle on the oil pan you'll see a plug, it may be a 14 or 15mm socket or bigger get a socket and ratchet and simply take the plug out let a little out check your level and keep doing that till its at the level it needs to be as simple as that. And that guy said its going to be real messy its not you are going to get some oil on your hands just keep a rag with you and you'll be good, you also don't need to cover you hands with anything its not going to hurt you unless you don't was your hands for a week lol.… [cont.]

A. NO one car company or engine can predict the amount of miles you can get before getting into major mechanical break-down/wear and tear... If you keep up on all your normal maintenance, you should get years of miles out of it. Of course normal maintenance will include battery, brakes, starter, alternator...and so on... as for the engine and all internal parts, just keep up with on time and "good" oil changes, also keep you cooling system fresh every year. A. If your talking about replacing the timing belt you will need the manual information to realign the timing marks for both the cam and the crankshaft. The ignition timing is controlled by the ECM through input from the camshaft and crankshaft sensors. You may find the timing mark and alignment info on the autozone.com site in the repair info section. do not try to start the car or rotate the engine until you have the cam and crank aligned properly!!!

A. Check the mileage. Some vehicles are set to come on for engine maintenance at maybe 25k, 50k, etc. That may be all it is. I've been told you have about 200 miles once the light comes on and then goes off before it leaves the memory of the computer. Some auto parts stores will read the code for free and tell you what the problem is. The car is trying to tell you something. It could be something simple like a bad sensor, wire off, vacuum line anything like that would be very simple and some mechanics, might even reconnect the vacuum line for free or they should as it only takes about a second. A. Chances are you need to replace it with an engine from another daewoo of similar age/Model. Best bet is to phone around scrap yards until you either give up (likely if the car/engine is unusual!), or you find one that MAY be suitable. All you need ask is do they have an engine that suitable for a 19xx /reg-year Daewoo Ceilo. You may need to give some additional detail like engine capacity/fuel type. If you phone around several scrap yards, you're likely to get asked any other relevant questions. Keep these additional details in mind, when phoning the other scrap yards. It's a big clue as to who actually knows if what they are selling is likely to fit! You then need to confirm the engines is a good one, and that it will indeed fit. If not… [cont.]
