How do I qualify for the 5% long term capital gain rate?
Q. I am trying to do some tax planning prior to selling a stock I have held for a long time (over 5 years). From my understanding, long term capital gains are taxed at 15% rate unless your taxable income would otherwise put you into a lower tax bracket, in which the long term rate is then 5%. Is the gain from the sale of the tax part of the taxable income? I have a very small annual income of about $20,000, but when I sell the stock, I will have a gain of about $500,000. Will it be taxed at 15% rate or due to my low income, will it be taxed at 5%? And if I wait until 2008 (maybe 2009) will it be taxed at 0%? The tax laws are very confusing in this area. Please help me out.

A. Your long term capital gains rate will be 5% if your overall bracket would be 15% or less if the break didn't exist for the LTCG. To figure that, you would include the capital gains amount - their rate then drops to figure your actual tax. With half a million in capital gains, your rate would be WAY over 15% so your LTCG rate would be 15%. With that much in capital gains, there's nothing you are going to do to bring your rate down much, no matter how much other income you do or don't have, unless you spread the stock sales over maybe 10 or 15 years, and by that time it's hard to tell if the LTCG rate tax break would still exist - depends on what congress does.

How bad does a 5 day drug suspension look on my college application?
Q. I received a 5 day out of school suspension for being under the influence of marijuana at school. I am currently a freshman and I am 15 years old. I have a 3.5 gpa, I play 3 sports at the school, in debate club, in all honors courses and I speak fluent spanish. I have a sister at Georgetown and I plan on going to a big university as well. After today drugs will be out of my life for sure. Do i have any chance at attending a decent college.

A. They don't look at that stuff at all. Universities only look at what you send them like grades, activites, SAT scores, or letters of recommendation. I had a 5 day suspension for alcohol and have skipped weeks of school at a time and I still got into most of the UC's I applied to including UCLA. Just make sure to really stop doing those things or your gpa might get hurt. Good luck!

A. 1. Hydrophobic molecules (Hydrocarbons and Oxygen) can cross with ease because they can dissolve in the lipid bi layer. 2. Small polar (uncharged) molecules will pass (water and carbon dioxide). 3. Large polar (uncharged) molecules will not pass (sugar). 4. Ions will not readily pass (H+, Na+, Cl-). 5. Large external materials can be taken in by the cell via endocytosis. 6. Large internal materials can be released by the cell via exocytosis.

A. 1. Star Anise (Bunga Lawang) native to southern China multiple fruit of the tree Illicium verum, which is a member of the magnolia family (Magnoliaceae),also called the "Indian Almond". The fruit is picked unripe, then dried in the sun to a brown colour. The fruit is always dried, and never eaten fresh. 2. Cinnamon (Kayu Manis) originates from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) Cinnamon comes from the bark of the cinnamon trees. In Malay spices vocabulary, it is called "kayu manis" literally meaning sweet wood. The light, intricate flavor of Ceylon cinnamon makes it the cinnamon of choice for dishes which do not have a lot of conflicting flavors competing. It will star in such dishes as custard, cinnamon ice cream, Dutch pears, stewed rhubarb, [cont.]

What is the greatest number smaller than 2 5 and the smallest number greater than 2 5?
Q. Find the greatest number smaller than 2 5 and the smallest number greater than 2 5. So what is the answer for this and how do we find it? Thanks =)
Asked by Sasha - Fri Feb 6 10:04:59 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You need to say what kind of number you are referring to, and to how many decimal places. If you're looking for the greatest whole number and/or integer, use a calculator to get the value of 2 root 5, which is 4.47. The greatest number smaller than that would be 4 and the smallest number greater than that would be 5. If you need decimals to the tenths or hundredths or thousandths, or ten thousandths, etc, you can find that too, just by carrying out the 2 root 5 to 4.472135955 and finding the number just below and just above that in each decimal place. Good luck!

How did 5 become the number of kills to be a fighter ace?
Q. Did this begin in WW!? Do all countries use 5 kills as the standard to declare one of their fighter jocks an ace? Any other interesting trivia related to this you can provide? Thanks!

A. This began in WW1, pilots usually did NOT survive more than 4 kills. So when they shot their 5th opponent, they were survivors and considered aces while most of their crew perished before they could kill their 5th opponent. Survival rate was LOW !

How much do 5 eggwhites weight on average?
Q. I don't have a scale but I have this recipe that says I need 100g of eggwhites. How much would 5 eggwhites weight on average? It can be in pounds too, I would convert it large eggs Thank you, I have just made meringa thanks to your help. They are already in the oven and will have to stay at 175F for about 3 hours!
Asked by Rino M - Sat Apr 11 18:23:56 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. From a large egg... egg whites weigh about 33 grams... so you need 3 egg whites (to get you to 99 grams). A whole large egg weighs about 50 grams, the yolk is about 17 g and the whites is 33 g. 5 egg whites would be about 166 grams. However, it all depends upon how old your eggs are. The fresher the eggs the more egg whites you have... the older the egg, the more chance you'll have less due to evaporation. You can use 4 egg whites to be sure to get 100g. A little over shouldn't ruin the recipe.

What are the signs that a 5-gallon propane tank is leaking?
Q. I have an RV that uses two 5-gallon propane tanks. One of them is leaking because I go through propane too fast when I have this set in. I have two more 5-gallon tanks and get a month to six weeks of use in the winter when they are connected, but only get two weeks when the other pair are connected. Both pair are used about the same, too, for the weather is fairly warm this winter down south. I'm trying to narrow down which of the two are leaking. The soapy water trick isn't working either.
Asked by Catfish_Woman154 - Sat Jan 6 19:49:37 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Take one from the first set and put it in the second set. If it still does it then it's the one that remained in the first set. If not then it's the one that you put in the second set.

A. There are 4 suits, and for each suit, 13 cards. You're choosing 5 of them, so 4(13C5) = 5148 hands. You can also solve this by looking up the frequency of the types of hands in poker. What you want is the number of flushes plus straight flushes plus royal flushes.

What does 4.5 on the scale mean on the Sears energy efficiency labels? Is a high number good or a low number?
Q. One energy guide label on the website has a ranking of 4.5 on the scale and the other has a ranking of 1 on the scale. What is "the scale" and which is better, a high number or a low number?

A. I think that you may be referring to a SEER rating. That is of energy efficiency, and the higher the number the more efficient.
